James Island lies ten minutes west of historic Charleston between the Stono River and Intracoastal Waterway to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. James Island is a historic place, having seen British Redcoats gather here by the thousands to invade Charleston during the Revolutionary War. The first shot of the Civil War took place here at Fort Johnson, which remains standing today. Part of James Island is in the city limits of Charleston and part is actually the City of James Island. Residents love their island home and enjoy its wonderful 643 acre County Park, restaurants, festivals, golf and the area’s beaches.
Riverland Terrace Real Estate
Riverland Terrace is one of the original neighborhoods. Most of the homes were constructed in the 1940s and ’50s although some are from as early as the 1930s. New homes are still being built today. The beautiful Avenue of Oaks that once led to the plantation house of the Wappoo Hall Plantation on the Stono River remains in Riverland Terrace today. These 73 live oak trees are from 100 to 200 years old. Riverland Terrace continues to be one of the most sought after addresses on the island and has been for many years.
Riverland Terrace can be reached off Maybank Highway near the intersection of Riverland Road. Within Riverland Terrace is the Charleston Municipal Golf Course, a public boat landing, five restaurants, several antique stores and the Fort Pembroke Civil War fortification from 1862. The neighborhood is close to the James Island County Park and within walking distance of neighborhood eateries and entertainments. These area amenities include:
- Independent Terrace Theater
- The Pour House
- Boulevard Diner
- The Mustard Seed
- James County Park: fishing pier, boat dock, paddleboats, kayaks, camping facilities, rental cottages, Splash Zone Waterpark, the largest Climbing Wall in the state, picnic tables and grills, annual Cajin’ Festival and award-winning Holiday Festival of Lights.
