To the west of historic Charleston, across the Ashley River and Charleston Harbor is James Island, home to approximately 36,500 residents. Part of the island is governed by the City of James Island and some is located within Charleston city limits. Both governments provide public services here. This beautiful island has great recreational complexes and county parks which offer camping, fishing, water sports of all kinds. Residents appreciate the island’s community atmosphere, good schools, family-oriented events and quiet neighborhoods. They also love their location close to downtown Charleston and Folly Beach.
Fort Johnson Estates Real Estate
Tucked away at the edge of beautiful salt-water marshes on the end of Fort Johnson Road is the quiet and private neighborhood of Fort Johnson Estates. Because only homeowners in this subdivision travel down this road, Fort Johnson Estates enjoys a rare tranquility without car traffic. Residents can still commute from their homes to downtown Charleston in ten minutes, however, and the beaches on Folly Island are only 15 minutes away.
The brick ranch homes in Fort Johnson Estates were built from the 1950s through the 1980s, with the majority built in the 1960s. Most are single level ranch-style plans, although there are some two-story homes available. The number of bedrooms range from two to four depending on the plan and any later additions.
Most of the lots in Fort Johnson Estates are at least 0.40 acre in size. These home sites are larger than average for even the older homes and neighborhoods on James Island, which tend to have bigger yards than new construction homes. Homes in this neighborhood are highly sought-after because of the size.
There are no annual HOA dues for the residents in this community. There is instead a Fort Johnson Estates Club that is responsible for the community’s amenities. Membership in this club is paid annually and anyone on the island can join. The club’s amenities, which are located in Fort Johnson Estates, include:
- Swimming Pool
- Swim Team
- Tennis Courts
Stiles Point Elementary is an excellent facility for neighborhood children. Fort Johnson Middle and James Island Charter High School are equally praised for their educational standards.
